Chapter 1. Landforms of the world
Answer the following questions.
1. What are the landforms? Name the main landforms of the Earth.
Ans. The different features that can be seen on the Earth’s surface are called landforms. The main landforms of the Earth are mountains, valleys, rivers, passes, plateaus, deserts, plains, islands, peninsulas and deltas.
2. What are fold mountains? Give an examples.
Ans. When two large landmasses push against each other fold mountains are formed. The Himalayas in Nepal, the Rockies in North America and the Alps in Europe are examples of fold mountains.
3. What is the difference between a mountain and a plateau?
Ans. Mountains have steep slopes and high peaks. Plateaus, on the other hand, are large areas of land that are higher than the surroundings but are more or less flat at the top.
4. What is peninsula? Give an example.
Ans. A peninsula is a piece of land that projects into the sea and is surrounded by water on three sides. The southern part of India is a peninsula.
5. What is the difference between a perennial and a seasonal river?
Ans. A perennial river has water throughout the year but a non-perennial river has water only for some months of the year. During the summer, the non-perennial rivers dry up.
6. What is thje difference between tributary and a distributary?
Ans. A tributary is a small river which joins the main river. Distributaries are small rivers or channels that break away from a main river.
7. What is a desert? Name some of the important deserts of the world.
Ans. Deserts are areas which are hot and dry. There is very little rainfall and very few plants grow here. The Sahara Desert, the Kalahari Desert, the Atacama Desert and the Thar Desert are examples of deserts.
