LESSON NO 1: THE TALE OF TWO MICE

Read comprehension

A.   Fill in the blanks to complete the sentences.

1. Timmy Willie was born in a village in a garden.

 2. Jimmy lived in a large house.

 3. Timmy fell asleep inside the hamper after eating peas.

 4. He broke three glasses when he landed in the middle of the party.

 5. The two young mice were serving the guests.

 6. The most comfortable bed in the house was the hole in a sofa pillow.

B. Answer these questions.

1.    How did Timmy Willie reach Johnny’s house?

Ans.. The gardener used to send fresh vegetables from the garden to a big house in the city. Johnny lived in that house. One day Timmy smelled fresh peas and hopped into the hamper. He ate peas and fell asleep inside the hamper. The gardener took the hamper to the house without knowing that Timmy was sleeping inside it. Timmy Willie reached Johnny’s house in this way.

Or

When Jimmy ate the fresh peas from hamper. He fell asleep in it and gardener dropped that hamper in Johnny's house. In this way he reached Johnny's house. 

2.    How did Johnny treat Timmy? What does this tell us about him?

Ans.. Johnny treated Timmy graciously. At first he was surprised to see Timmy but soon he introduced Timmy to the other mice. He also invited Timmy to join the dinner party. Later at night he took Timmy to the most comfortable bed he had which was a hole in a sofa pillow. These gestures of Jimmy show that he is a sensitive and friendly mouse and also a great host.

 or

Johnny treated Timmy very nicely. he offered him food, invited to dinner party and took him to most comfortable bed. This tells us that Johnny was a nice host and well behaved.

3.    Why could Timmy not sleep on ‘the most comfortable bed’ in the house?

Ans.. Timmy could not sleep on ‘the most comfortable bed’ in the house because the sofa smelled of cat.

 

4.    What did Timmy miss?

Ans.. Timmy missed his home in the garden, his salads and roots.

 

5.    What would Johnny and his friends do every day in the house?

Ans.. Johnny and his friends racketed about under the floor all day. They came out and ran around all over the house in the evening.

 

6.    What did Timmy decided to do after a few days?

Ans.. Timmy decided to go back to his village after a few day

C. Read this sentence from the story and answer the questions that follow.

He lost his appetite and turned pale.

1. Who is ‘he’?

Ans..‘He’ is Timmy Willie.

 

2. What made him lose his appetite and turn pale?

Ans.. Timmy Willie learnt that two mice where chased by a cat all day while serving food to the guest. He was afraid of the cat. This information made him lose his appetite and he turned pale.

 

3. What do the words ‘lost his appetite’ means?

Ans..The words ‘lost his appetite’ mean he lost his will to eat.

 

4. What happened immediately after this?

Ans.. Jimmy took Timmy to the best bed reserved specially for the guest for sleeping. The bed was nothing but a hole in a sofa pillow. Timmy refused to sleep there because it smelled of cats. At last Timmy slept under the floor, inside the hole.
